Browse old mail with mutt

A good way to look for some old messages in that old big and ugly mail file or yours tucked away to a DVD somewhere is to run the command line mail client mutt.

To open the particular mailbox file in read only (-R) mode:

  • mutt -R -f myoldmailboxfile

Then you can search for the messages by pressing slash “/” and entering the string you are looking for. you can also specify where you want to look for. Also, entering all letters lowercase makes the search to ignore case of the letters, having any capitals in the string makes the search to be case sensitive.

Enter search mode:

  • /

Next result:

  • n

Back to index:

  • i

Find “john” in the message “From:” field:

  • ~f john

Find “john” in the message “Subject:” field:

  • ~s john

Find “john” in the message body:

  • ~b john

Find messages from John about mutt

  • ~f john ~s mutt
