Secondary display not detected in Ubuntu with Nvidia

I had been struggling with my laptop’s Nvidia video card for ages. The most common problem was Ubuntu/Mint being unable to detect the secondary display, the external monitor attached to VGA output of the laptop. Neither the regular GNOME tools, nor the NVIDIA X Server Settings were helping.

But the workaround is extremely simple! Just use the disper utility!

This command installs the utility:

  • sudo apt-get install disper

This command (either in Terminal window or in Alt+F2) immediately directs all video output to the secondary display, no questions asked:

  • disper -S
